Kickass Movie List #96: Punch-Drunk Love

I'm not even a big fan of Punch-Drunk Love. I certainly like parts of it, and obviously I'm a fairly large fan of today's scene, but overall, the movie left me kind of... not cold, just sort of "yup, that's a movie I saw". I can appreciate that Adam Sandler puts out a hell of an effort, though, and this scene between Sandler and Phillip Seymour Hoffman is fantastic.

"That's That"

It would seem that most people prefer the super over-the-top Phillip Seymour Hoffman "Shut up!" scene that predicates this one. That one's good, too. In fact, I'll say that whenever Hoffman shows his face in this movie, great things happen. My favorite scene, though, is the scene where Barry confronts the Matress King.

I love everything about this scene, from the phone receiver that Sandler brings with him to the "ow. ow." that Hoffman says as she does his hair.

Sandler gets the best bit, though.

"I didn't do anything. I'm a nice man. I mind my own business. So you tell me 'that's that' before I beat the hell from you. I have so much strength in me you have no idea. I have a love in my life. It makes me stronger than anything you can imagine. I would say 'that's that', Mattress Man."

Oh, and the "th..that's that!" bit at the end is great, too. It's entirely possible that I'm rating this scene too low.   Here it is (annoyingly clean edited - only one I could find on YouTube)

  1. As much as I love this scene, I'm not even sure it's my favorite one in the movie (when he manhandles the dudes in the truck and casually hands back the weapon...man oh man). But I'd call this an underrating, as you suggested.

  2. Punch-Drunk Love ends up to me as a sort of sketch movie, full of memorable scenes that didn't really work for me all together. I love this scene (obviously), and I love a couple of other scenes, and there are interesting scenes everywhere. I just... don't know.
